Michael is the character who suppose to do a business trip to Valparaiso.
Valparaiso is a unfamiliar name to me. I don't even know how to pronounce like some of the characters in the play. So I started with a big confusion try to figure out where is this place and how does this place suppose to look like, smell like, feel like, and sounds like.
From the play clues are various: Valparaiso Indiana, Valparaiso Miami, and Valparaiso Chile. Same name but in different locations. How would each place mean to the readers?! Valparaiso Indian may full of barren ground with some grows. Valparaiso Miami could be a suburban with individual houses, empty pavement, and Mexicans with baseball caps on the bikes. Valparaiso Chile in my mind is blank. I have no idea how this place will look like. It is scary to have nothing that I grasp about Chile.
The name of the location tells a particular story about the place. It gives a piece of land appearance. Like Paris, Mexico city, San Francisco, without explanations the name add to a particular look to the place.....more to come.
Last, it will be pity not to mention the film Paris, Taxes. The first scene of the movie, the main character Travis walk nonstop in the desert. Water running out, sharp sunlight, over grown beard. I taste Taxes, desert, and Travis. They overlap a sense of dry and burning.
